Onboarding: Common issues and how to fix them

The following article addresses some of the common issues we see, and how to fix them. You may see one of the following screens:

This usually means one of a few issues:

1. Organization does not exist

The organization you are trying to connect to doesnt exist. Be conscious of the org name you input. Load up your Azure Devops organization homepage in the tab next to Backrightup. Check that you are copying the correct org name from that tab (as per below screenshot - replace 'acmeorg' with your organization name)

The text you put in the "Organization" textbox MUST match this:

2. Incorrect Session or Incorrect permissions assigned

If you have your organization name correct (step 1 above), try to onboarding from an incognito window:

How to restore your Azure Build Pipelines

Our backups run by default on an automated basis. That means every day we take a backup of all your build (and release) pipelines and keep them in an encrypted state. You may also backup to your own storage. When you make a change to one of your pipelines, Azure Devops automatically creates a new revision of the pipelines (both build and release). We will also create a new backup of the new pipeline and keep your old pipeline too.

Please note that due to API restrictions, only YAML based pipelines are available for Restore through Backrightup. You may click the 'Download' button to restore the both Classic and YAML based pipelines. For more information on importing a downloaded classic (or YAML) pipeline, click here.

To restore YAML based pipelines, try the following:

1. Log into Backrightup and click on "Pipelines" in the top menu bar

2. Scroll down to "Builds" and choose the build pipeline you wish to restore and click on the "Restore" link

How to setup your own Azure Storage for your backups

Our backups run by default on an automated basis. That means every day we take a backup of all your build (and release) pipelines and keep them in an encrypted state. You may also backup to your own storage which is easy to configure.

1. Log into Backrightup and click on your avatar in the top menu bar and click "Settings"

2. Click on "Storage Settings"

**3. Add your own storage by clicking on the "Add New Azure Storage". Please double check your Azure Storage Connection string. Note that this string is kept in 256bit AES encrypted form with rotating keys and not available out-of-service **

Note, the storage connection string is usually located under "Access Keys" in your Azure Portal. Click "Show" to see the connection

4. You can optionally choose to "force all repos to use this storage location". Handy when you have multiple storage locations for separate business units or clients with geographical backup requirements where you can set each repo to use different storage

Welcome to Backrightup. Using the below guide you can get registered and have your first backups running in under 1 minute. To complete the optimum registration for Backrightup, its preferable to have

Google Chrome incognito window (or another browser with incognito facility)
Dedicated Service account (eg backrightup@your-company.com) - note this is not MANDATORY, but preferable. it can always be changed later
Logged into your Azure Devops account with the service account above
Azure Devops account you would like to backup
Your account is part of the Project Collection Administrators group
Your account is NOT a Stakeholder account

Please all note: Its imperative that you use an incognito window where you are signed into the correct Azure Devops account before starting authentication. For best results, please make sure that the user is a service account and is part of the Project Collection Administrators group (under Organization settings -> Permissions). Its imperative that you use an incognito window where you are signed into the correct Azure Devops account before starting authentication. For best results, please make sure that the user is a service account and is part of the Project Collection Administrators group (under Organization settings -> Permissions)

Backrightup uses oAuth Authentication to authenticate to your Azure Devops organization as per best practices published by Microsoft. This requires that the browser window you use is authenticated to the correct Azure Devops Org.

In case you need to, these backups are easily restorable.

1. Log into Backrightup and click on "Repos" in the side menu bar. You should see a list of repos related to the Project chosen at the top of the page.

2. Choose the repo backup you wish to restore and click on the "Restore" link 3. Every repo must be linked to a Project. Choose the Organization, Project and the backup version in the dropdowns

4. Click on Restore backup - you can monitor the outcome in the Logs or simply navigate to your repos section in your Project to view the newly restored repo
